Album Review

The debut album by emo-tinged indie rockers Rookie of the Year originally started as a solo project by singer/songwriter Ryan Dunson, and most of The Goodnight Moon sounds it, to the point that one suspects that at least some of these songs were constructed by recording electric guitar, keyboards, bass and drums over Dunson's existing acoustic guitar and vocal tracks. As a result of these relatively static song structures, there's a samey quality to The Goodnight Moon that detracts from Dunson's appealingly boyish vocals and solid melodic sense; "Set the Sails, Red Beret" and "Pop Destroyed the Scene" are both catchy pop-emo tunes in the style of the Juliana Theory, but each sounds better on its own than they do on an album where it's easy to notice how similar they are. Stylistic change-ups like the stark piano ballad "The Weekend" and the completely unexpected New Order vibe of the danceable, electronic "Life, Fall Fast Now" do serve to break up The Goodnight Moon; more musical variety of that sort would serve this promising band well.

Pat Murphy drove me to school one day...

The production on this record is immaculate. It's just jaw-dropping quality engineering. Even if you don't like the music, buy the album, just to admire the state-of-the-art technical genius that went into this record. Pat and his friends are pretty good guys. Support their music, because they'd buy your album if it ever came out. Too bad it never has. Enjoy.

i started listening to rookie of the year not too long ago and fell in love with them. i have been anticipating for the goodnight moon to come out forever and now it's here and everyone should go buy it. the songs are all really fun to listen to and have great beats. don't doubt the ambient genre, it makes the music even better!

I had the chance to open for these guys on their tour last year and not only are they really cool guys, but they are amazing musicians. The details that are in these songs are incredible, i'm still finding new parts that I never heard before. Buy this immediately. Favorite track: Silhouettes (All Eyes Above)

Pop emo outfit Rookie of the Year started as a solo acoustic project in the style of Dashboard Confessional, but quickly turned into a proper band by their second album. Rookie of the Year began in 2004 when Fayetteville, NC, native Ryan Dunson wrote and recorded the solo album Having to Let Go. After the album's initial self-released run, Dunson signed to the indie One Eleven Records, which reissued Having to Let Go with new cover art. In the meantime, Dunson assembled a full-band lineup of Rookie...
