Cole Porter Under the Sun!

This is a delightful collection of Cole Porter favorites, charmingly arranged by the conductor, John Lanchberry. Just some of the tunes included are: "I've Got You Under My Skin", "I Concentrate On You", "Night and Day", "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Anything Goes", "It's Delovely", "In the Still of the Night" and "Begin The Beguine". The songs evoke scenes from the film but also provide a wonderful score to listen to as a whole. This is a great CD if you love classic melodies from the 30's and 40's. Listen to the samples and you'll be swept away!

A Wonderful Score

When I first saw this film in the theater, I noticed how much the great score added to the campy, light-hearted atmosphere of the film. Although the description says that this album was released in 1982, I looked in vain throughout Los Angeles for the soundtrack when the film came out, and was pleasantly surprised to finally find it here, nearly thirty years later. The arrangements not only include wonderful riffs and segments of classic Cole Porter tunes, but there is also the other evocative music (like the "Greek" melody when they arrive on Daphne's island) that added so much to the film. The movie is still one of my all-time favorites, and I now finally have the soundtrack. I urge you to listen to it!

Many arguments could be generated over whether Cole Porter or Irving Berlin should be considered America's greatest tunesmith. Both wrote music and lyrics; it's clearly a pick 'em situation. Porter had violin and piano lessons as a child, pursued undergraduate studies at Yale (where he penned fight songs that endure to this day such as "Bulldog"), and studied law and music at Harvard, all courtesy of a rich grandfather. His grandfather was appalled Porter would consider music as a career and never...
