iTunes Editors’ Notes

This album was originally released only in Germany as The House of Love. Considering the band had two other self-titled studio albums, this set has been mercifully renamed The German Album. It's a collection of early singles, b-sides, and stray tracks that hadn't found their way to proper release. As a hodgepodge, it's strikingly coherent. "Shine On" isn't the 1990 version better known to casual fans but an earlier recording. The House of Love was an important link in British pop music, serving as a rightful heir to The Smiths and infusing a sense of The Jesus and Mary Chain into the atmospheric ends of its pop music. "Welt" shows the band at its most stripped down, with leader Guy Chadwick sharing the mic with Andrea Heukamp, who takes a rare lead vocal for "On the Hill." "Destroy the Heart" is redolent of The Cure, with punchy lead guitar and flowing chord progressions. "Nothing to Me" captures the band's dour mood. Though The House of Love never fully connected in the U.S., its music deserves to be discovered by fans of '80s alternative pop.

Their demo tape attracted the attention of Alan McGee, the...
