Album Review

The husband and wife duo Fleming & John wrote, produced, and recorded their second album, The Way We Are, in their home studio. This kind of intimacy and control shines as the songs take the listener through the various stages of a relationship including flirtation, infatuation, love, jealousy, and, eventually, breakup. John Painter plays everything from guitar to flugelhorn to something called a spacephone. Painter's proficiency in a plethora of instruments is matched note for note by the diversity and range of Fleming McWilliam's angelic vocals. The Way We Are exemplifies the band's heterogeneous qualities with the quirky "I'm So Small,," the guitar- and string-driven "The Pearl," and the lazy mood inducing "Rain All Day," a re-worked carry over from their first album, Delusions of Grandeur. "Ugly Girl," the first single from the album, pits comical lyrics about jealousy against a xylophone-laden melody. There are no limits to where Fleming & John can go musically and vocally, allowing them to create a collage of unique songs that are truly their own sound.

Best band out of Nashville...EVER

As far as I'm concerned, everyone should have a copy of both CD's! Every song is worth every penny. Someone stole my copy of "The Way We Were" so I'm having to purchase it again and I'm glad to do it! They're also very nice people...

Not the same old stuff!

I bought this album on a whim after hearing "Ugly Girl" and falling in love with the song. When I saw the album, I bought it pretty much only hearing the one song, but I must say, I'm SO GLAD I did! Fleming can really sing! With a powerful voice and the instruments provided by John, it's really a work of art. My favorite song is "The Pearl", but that is really a tough call. The music touches everyone in some way. "The Way We Are" talks about a relationship that is possibly falling apart. "Ugly Girl" is the ultimate song for ex's. The album has a few light-hearted songs in "I'm So Small" and "Devil's Food", but don't be fooled! There is deep meaning in most of these songs. I highly recommend them. Proably the best "unknown" band I've ever heard!

They need another album

I was very impressed with this album!!! This is a must buy for everyone that likes their 1st project. BUY IT!!
