iTunes Review

Perhaps in response to the somber tones of 2006’s mostly acoustic collection Animal Years and perhaps because he’s been touring for so long, Idaho-born singer-songwriter Josh Ritter turns up the electricity for 2007’s The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter. There’s a pop-friendly streak of sunshine emitting from these tracks where previously Ritter might have let clouds roll in. The album opener, “To the Dogs or Whoever,” begins with Ritter shooting his mouth off with biblical references and a generally manic state of mind. “Right Moves” shuffles with a horn-backed celebratory vibe. “Rumors“ features an unexpected funk to its piano groove. And “Next to the Last Romantic” steps up to a Johnny Cash railroad chug. Not that Ritter’s lost his penchant for the reflective, graceful move. “The Temptation of Adam” quietly embraces the cello and acoustic guitar schematic that’s been many songwriters’ bread n’ butter while the ghostly choir of “Wait for Love” (here in two versions) sounds as if it’s being overheard from the next room. Ritter’s one of the few emerging songwriters successfully finding new ways to explore the old territory.

He wrote, he sang, he conqured

Josh Ritter has put together a great CD and has truely outdone himself with this one. It is more up to beat then his preivious ones and has it's own certain chrisma. songs such as "To The Dogs or Whoever" "Right Moves" and "Rumors" all are faster and have more energy than previous songs witch in my oppinion is a great thing for any artist. A Great CD for a Great Price, do yourself a favor and take in this amaZing CD.

Amazing songwriter and wonderful human being

Josh has the amazing ability to be playful and fun and witty in a song, and then turn around and be introspective and thoughtful and strike you to your very soul in the next song. I first bought "Animal Years" on a fluke and loved it. Historical Conquests is overall more upbeat and playful, but there's also songs like "The Temptation of Adam" that could be a novel in itself. There is so much depth in all that he does, whatever the mood. I've now seen him live three times, and highly recommend his shows. You truly come away with a feeling that you've just spent a few hours with a good friend who happens to be a very talented artist, and he's just shared some of the mystery and wonder of life with you. In my opinion, there is no finer musician out there today.

$8 is a great deal for an incredible record - they don't get better than Josh Ritter

This amazing album is $8 on iTunes. That is a steal. Josh Ritter is without a doubt one of the best artists in the business, and this record is one incredible romp. Josh is a brilliant lyricist, and his songwriting skills shine on tracks like "Open Doors" and "The Temptation of Adam." Historical Conquests is Josh's most fun album to date, and there's no way you can hear songs like "To the Dogs or Whoever" or "Real Long Distance" without a smile on your face and a bounce in your step. Buying this album is one of the best things you can do for only $8 (!!!), and there's no reason for you to pass it up. As others have said, catch Josh live if you can--you'll be a fan for life. :) Truly, Josh Ritter is a class act. He's one of the most refreshing artists currently working in the music industry. If you're looking for true talent and passion, look no further than Josh Ritter. I can't recommend this highly enough.
