"The Hum" by Hookworms on iTunes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Hookworms balance their aggression with solid rhythms, extended exploratory jams, and a melodic sense that’s subtler than it sounds. The Leeds, England–based quintet revel in mystery, listing themselves by their initials, never full names. Accessibility isn’t their concern, but they’re never deliberately off-putting. “The Impasse” is a head-on, no-nonsense garage-punk opener, while “Beginners” centers on a motorik groove (from new drummer JN) that gives them excess room to explore their chemistry. “Off Screen” slows to a ballad tempo with indirect-sounding vocals and clear, focused drums and bass. Elements of postpunk, shoegaze, Krautrock, and psychedelia create the band's distinct sound.

Eric is Biggie,

Heard this on WEQX 102.7. Awesome lo-fi rock! Definitely a crank it up and dance around tunes!

Noise Rock Awesomeness

Namedmelaika,

When I first heard Hookworms' debut LP Pearl Mystic I was a bit thrown off. It wasn't until the third or fourth time that I listened to it all the way through that I realized how much of a gem it really was.

The Hum skips over the "learning curve" and is listenable and lovable from the very first play through. It's almost primal in the energy it gives off.

Heavily reverbed shouts echo from overtop of screeching guitars and droning organs. The drums hold everything together in rhythmic perfection.

If like noise rock, shoegaze, punk and/or psychedelic than The Hum is a must have.

About Hookworms

Droning and mysterious, English band Hookworms have a sound that pulls together some of the best elements of neo-psychedelia, Krautrock, and space rock, combining them into murky, mind-altering blasts of socially conscious noise rock. The Leeds-based band, whose members go only by their initials (MJ on vocals, keyboards and production, JW and SS on guitarist, MB on bass and drummer JN) to avoid putting themselves above their music, came together in 2009, and released their self-titled EP on Gringo Records two years later. Their first proper full-length release, Pearl Mystic, followed on the label in 2013. Domino off-shoot label Weird World picked up the album for distribution and also released their next record, The Hum, in late 2014. ~ Gregory Heaney
