EDITORS’ NOTES

Hookworms balance their aggression with solid rhythms, extended exploratory jams, and a melodic sense that’s subtler than it sounds. The Leeds, England–based quintet revel in mystery, listing themselves by their initials, never full names. Accessibility isn’t their concern, but they’re never deliberately off-putting. “The Impasse” is a head-on, no-nonsense garage-punk opener, while “Beginners” centers on a motorik groove (from new drummer JN) that gives them excess room to explore their chemistry. “Off Screen” slows to a ballad tempo with indirect-sounding vocals and clear, focused drums and bass. Elements of postpunk, shoegaze, Krautrock, and psychedelia create the band's distinct sound.

Hookworms are good 4U...

I was watching the American Music Awards (AMAs) yesterday and couldn't believe One Direction won like 3 awards!?! It was like being in the Twilight Zone where everyone is different than you. I asked myself, "Why aren't truly good bands winning?" But then, what can you expect from the AMAs. So I went to the computer cuz i remembered hearing about this band and listening to the streaming of this album on iTunes. I bought the album and sat down and listened in blissful punk rock satisfaction (if there is such a thing). The energy of the punk as in "Radio Tokyo" and the different vibes coming from songs like "Beginners" is so cool! Now THIS is a good band! There ARE some sane people still out there making good music!

Noise Rock Awesomeness

When I first heard Hookworms' debut LP Pearl Mystic I was a bit thrown off. It wasn't until the third or fourth time that I listened to it all the way through that I realized how much of a gem it really was.

The Hum skips over the "learning curve" and is listenable and lovable from the very first play through. It's almost primal in the energy it gives off.

Heavily reverbed shouts echo from overtop of screeching guitars and droning organs. The drums hold everything together in rhythmic perfection.

If like noise rock, shoegaze, punk and/or psychedelic than The Hum is a must have.
