American country + British pop = Pure Brilliance

I think I bought this album due to Johnny Cash's cover of "The Beast In Me", although I could have heard Nick Lowe's first, but either way it blew my 16 year old mind. The somber confession of that song, plus the ache and longing of "Lover Don't Go", mixed with the tongue in cheek humor of "True Love Travels On a Gravel Road", "12-Step Program", "Where's My Everything?", and a few loose rockers make for an eclectic, inviting mix. Nick Lowe's voice is a warm and distinctive instrument, and his writing voice is the same. I don't know how anyone else rates him or The Impossible Bird, but for anyone into quirky singer/songwriter power-pop rock, with a little dab of sentimental crooning, this is an album to treasure.

His rough, ragged production style earned him the nickname "Basher" and also established the amateurish,...
