iTunes Review

The teenaged angst of this Nashville quartet’s debut has morphed only in its confident sound for the 2008 follow-up Get Awkward. Tunes such as “Bitches Leave,” “You’re A Waste,” and “Food Fight” aren’t much for rhetorical eloquence, but they do rock with a manic intensity that resembles a band running on a treadmill paced several miles too fast. This is punk rock played the way it was meant to be played: abrasion above all else. This crazed atmosphere means Pet constantly sound like they’re playing catch-up, rushing guitar riffs to the finish line. Their possessed lead singer, Jemina Pearl, ranges from declarative screams to hysterical whelps at the top of her register, resembling X Ray Spex’s Poly Styrene and Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein at their most emotionally tormented -- or just highly excited. There’s a palpable joy in the mock football chants stalking “The Beast Within” and “Bummer Time.” “Heart Throb” is playfully adolescent. “The Kelly Affair” and “Zombie Graveyard Party” resemble a B-movie’s perfect soundtrack.

As for the songs...

I read in a review that three songs are taken off for the American release, due to legal issues. They are "Becky", "Blow Yr Mind", and "Black Hole". It stinks, but I think they are just being released later. I bought the album, but downloaded the leaked version just for the three other songs, especially Becky. The album, however, is a crazy whirlwind wild rollercoaster ride through pizza, Ninja Turtles, and zombies of course. Each song is fiercer, crazier, and much more intense. 1. Super Soaked - 4/5 - This song is very good yet it gets a bit old after a lot of listens. The topic is a little trying too hard but her scream is so piercing it's awesome. 2. The Kelly Affair - 5/5 - A breakneck surf punk song! Possibly the ONLY surf punk song! A homage to the cheap B movie class Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, it's about living in the valley and the danger and drugs that comes with it. 3. Twisted Nerve - 4/5 - This song is very deep and personal. It took a couple listens to get into it. However, I find it interesting they used the lyric "cut my own skin/pretend it's yours" because it seems so "emo." I am not, of course, accusing them of being emo, but they have seperated themselves so much from that whole scene that I find it weird they chose that lyric. 4. Heart Throb - 4/5 - Her voice is super cute in this. The topic is awesome and it's a song you have to move to. 5. B****** Leave - 5/5 - This is AWESOME. Stealing a line from Robocop, it's about catty girls that Jemina does not like. And is, quite simply, telling them to leave. 6. Bummer Time - 4/5 - Totally fun. About teenage mutant ninja turtles. It's a super unique and risky song but it totally works. 7. You're A Waste - 5/5 - The ballad of the album. It's very sad, very personal. I love the lyrics. 8. Food Fight! - 3/5 - This song is trying too hard. The energy is cool but the topic is lame. But I love byop, so it's all good. 9. Zombie Graveyard Party - 5/5 - This song is absolutely amazing. My favorite of 2008 so far. All about zombies with priceless lyrics. The tune is totally catchy and dance-worthy as well. 10. What's Your Damage - 4/5 - The song is cruisin' along, totally fun, and then she just breaks down with pounding drums and guitars everywhere IF YOU WANT ME GIVE ME A SIGN. Awesome. 11. Creepy Crawl - 3/5 - Eerie. Jemina sounds very panicky and actually leaves the listener wondering what she did to feel so creeped out. 12. The Beast Within - 4/5 - Such a fun chorus. Party anthem. Leaves the feeling that there is more to come from this amazing band. Get Awkward is phenomenal. I love it. I recommend it to anyone. And again about the songs, it is not an iTunes thing it's an American thing. It's just the regular album, North American version. Blow Yr Mind was only 30 seconds anyway and Black Hole was boring. Becky, however, is amazing and I am very dissapointed that it isn't on my copy of the album. I was really looking forward to it. Anyways, awesome album, buy it you won't regret it.

they're back...finally

still the refreshing punk teens we loved, only a little more grown up, but not too much.

I'll show you awkward

BYOP has taken everything to a new level from their last album. Jemina's snarl is more fierce, everything is tighter and there's a new found level of experience from the last album, no matter how amazing it was. This album, it's amazing, probably the best album of this year so far for me. If you don't believe me read Rolling Stone review, it got a 4 out of 5 which means it's really good, so all the haters, including the idiot who gave this a one. EVERYONE BUY THIS, especially if you like indie rock or garage rock:D

Biography

Formed: 2003 in Nashville, TN

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Blasting out of Nashville, TN, like a bottle rocket, the teenage garage-noise-pop band Be Your Own Pet makes music that's as frenzied as it is catchy. The band formed in 2003 out of the ashes of Night Shift Nurses, which was the project of drummer Jamin Orrall and his bassist brother Jeff. The pair practiced in their basement and also ran the label Infinity Cat; and eventually joined forces with guitarist Jonas Stein — who was in another band on the label, Jimmy Cushman?, at the time —...
