Editors’ Notes

As one of the most important songwriters of the '60s and '70s, Carole King began her career behind the scenes, penning hits for The Monkees ("Pleasant Valley Sunday," "So Goes Love"), Bobby Vee ("Take Good Care of My Baby"), The Everly Brothers ("Crying in the Rain"), and many others before breaking through the pop market with her own eternal smash, 1971's Tapestry. These demo tapes were the reference tapes for other musicians to learn her songs. Despite being demos, the performances here are inspired and the arrangements quite detailed. Several tunes would land on Tapestry; however, hearing them in their earlier stages illustrates how well thought out and considered these songs are. Tunes like "It's Too Late" and "You've Got a Friend" may sound simple and as natural as breathing, but it took real toil and experience to bring them to fruition. Most rewarding here, however, are King's vocals. She sings these songs to perfection. This version of the album features two bonus cuts: "Every Breath I Take" and "Oh No, Not My Baby."

Customer Reviews

It wasn't a Sunday morning breakfast around my house as a little kid without the accompaniment of Carole King. I grew up with her music playing around the house. My mother was a huge fan and passed the love of her music on to me; I've even had the pleasure of seeing her in concert twice. Whether you are a new fan or an old one, this collection is worth the buy. She truly is a legend!

Every Breath I Take

I always wanted to hear her do "Every Breath I Take". Not many singers can pull that one off. Pitney was one who could. Thanks Carole for this beautiful song.
