Album Review

Released along with a slew of other A&M greatest-hits collections, 1970's Greatest Hits takes listeners through a dozen Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 tunes from the albums Herb Alpert Presents through Crystal Illusions. Not all of these were hits — indeed, not all of them were singles — and they are not representative of the wide range of Brazilian material that Mendes cut during this period. But listeners do get a good idea of how Mendes' winningly sexy blend of American female voices, simplified bossa nova rhythms, and lavish Dave Grusin orchestrations captivated mainstream America in the late '60s. Look Around receives by far the most attention, with five tracks — which is only fitting, since in retrospect it appears to be Mendes' most irresistibly memorable album. For a more comprehensive overview of Sergio Mendes on CD, though, Classics, Vol. 18 is a better bet. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

Sandra Gardner 47 Is Right

She got it right. When I bought this album, I was a college kid, money was tight, but I spent it on this album. I also bought Art Garfunkel's album, Angel Clare. What does this album have that modern music doesn't? Easy. There is a lightness to this music. These singers -Lani Hall in particular- are obviously having fun. They enjoy singing this music. How many of today's publicized-to-the-extreme bands communicate that light sense of enjoyment? Not many.

One of my top favorites ever, ever.

I love this CD. I love bossa nova. "The Look of Love" and "Like a Lover" are gorgeous, regardless of how "simple" they can be called... but the lyrics flow so well with the music. Lines like "a look that time can't erase" or "like the morning sun to you" just get to me. And "So Many Stars" is languid and dreamy, like I'm walking along a tropical beach in the moonlight under breezy palm trees, with my love. Pretty World is possibly my most favorite song ever, ever. I can't explain why for sure - I know it sounds stupid to like a pop song. Maybe it's that incredible line, "nothing else to make but breakfast and love" combined with an equally contented melody, that just melts my heart. For me the song is also all tied up in happy summer day trips with my family when I was a kid, with the window rolled down and this song playing on the radio and everything was perfect. Just perfect.

So Many Stars

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 have a unique sound and it is just wonderful. It truly has the Brasil beat and all of the songs on the album are excellent. It makes for a very pleasant ambience. They are definitely one of my favorite recording artists and album.
