Marty Robbins was already a country star by 1959, but this album made him a pop star and household name. Robbins's rich, agile voice had as much in common with pop crooners as country singers, and his fluid delivery on these tales of the Old West helped him make the pop-country crossover. Despite the fact that they were unprecedentedly long for the period, "Big Iron" and "El Paso"—both penned by Robbins—were huge hits, unfolding dramatic narratives full of danger and romance. And Robbins' take on traditional tunes like "Billy the Kid" and "Utah Carol" made them fit perfectly into the mythic Western world he conjured up.

the music that really showcases Marty's Superb Vocal Talent

This man had such an amazing voice, was a funny and talented showman, wrote beautiful songs that touched the heart and soul, and was a warm, nice guy who always treated his fans with such respect and gratitude! A gracious, sweet southern cowboy. He was. and is a favorite of our family. We went to his concerts, bought all his albums, listened to him on the radio, and watched him on tv when the opportunity arose. He is missed so deeply by his fans. If you buy Marty's music, you'll find pleasure in listening to it for many years, as perfection never goes out of style. No singer in this country has ever been so undervalued by the music industry! This man was THE BEST!

Do not hesitate

One of the best albums ever done, in any genre. Simple, clear, beautiful, melodic. Awesome.

No artist in the history of country music has had a more stylistically diverse career than Marty Robbins. Never content to remain just a country singer, Robbins performed successfully in a dazzling array of styles during more than 30 years in the business. To his credit, Robbins rarely followed trends but often took off in directions that stunned both his peers and fans. Plainly Robbins was not hemmed in by anyone's definition of country music. Although his earliest recordings were unremarkable weepers,...
