Editors’ Notes

Deerhoof’s experimental rock restlessly draws on a number of styles. One section of a song might evoke prog; later, punk energy might morph into classic-rock grandeur. Guitarists John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez wrench an impressive array of tones from their instruments, and bassist Satomi Matsuzaki’s gentle vocals fit nicely into various settings. And what can you say about Greg Saunier’s drumming — is there a better drummer in all of indie rock? 2011’s Deerhoof vs. Evil is the group’s 10th full-length and it’s a keeper. “The Merry Barracks” is a good example of how the group melds disparate elements. Punching and crunching guitars, New Orleans-meets-Led Zeppelin drumming, melodic vocals, and other elements make for a winning track. “No One Asked to Dance” displays Deerhoof’s quiet side. Jazzy guitar runs, gentle strums, keyboard flourishes, and wispy vocals mark this unusual cut. “Let’s Dance the Jet” is a lively cover of an instrumental from a Greek film, while “Qui Dorm, Només Somia” features lyrics sung in Catalan amidst the tinkling of bells.
