iTunes Review

Stylistically speaking, 1978's The Man Machine could be seen as the sequel to its predecessor, Trans Europe Express. From its fluid synthesizer melodies to its disco-informed electronic beats and Vocoder-assisted robot voices, it's the ultimate example of Kraftwerk's pioneering work with electronics. From "The Robots" to the title track, the band continued to underline their technophile aesthetic and image, perhaps even more succinctly than before. And for as many overtures to pop accessibility as they'd made on previous albums, tunes like "Neon Lights" and "The Model" were the most overtly pop-oriented tracks they'd created up to that time, with the latter becoming an international hit that went all the way to No. 1 in the U.K.

Electronica fans, your respect paying begins here

Kraftwerk are THE pioneers of the genre, not Daft Punk, not Erasure, not New Order, Depeche Mode, Yaz(oo), Can, Tangerine Dream, Yellow Magic Orchestra. Kraftwerk has been doing it since 1970! So many have been influenced by this band, and there are very few musical groups that can be considered truly important to music or a genre. The Beatles, Bob Marley… Kraftwerk.

Its normal to compute.

The creator of modern electro pop is Kraftwerk. Just ask NIN, Daft Punk, or just about anyone else on the radio. These guys started in the 70s before anyone realized the future sound of synthesizer and computers and pocket calculators. You may not "get" the sound at first, songs like Metropolis or TEE or Uranium or News- these are advanced. So start with songs like Elektrogardiogram, Vitamin, Numbers, and their more organic Neon Lights or She's a Model- these are more palatable to the uninitiated ear. The catalog is not too deep, go start with MINIMUM-MAXIMUM, and work back to their self titled 1971 debut. Seriously- 1971. You wear how old? -15?

Past, Present and Future

Kraftwerk have been the most influential group in the electronic music ever. It is amazing to note that compositions like these were recorded… 40 years ago! They were the first to convince us that electronic rhythms would have heart and soul within. It deserves the price you are going to pay for it.

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

During the mid-'70s, Germany's Kraftwerk established the sonic blueprint followed by an extraordinary number of artists in the decades to come. From the British new romantic movement to hip-hop to techno, the group's self-described "robot pop" -- hypnotically minimal, obliquely rhythmic music performed solely via electronic means -- resonates in virtually every new development to impact the contemporary pop scene of the late-20th century, and as pioneers of the electronic music form, their enduring...
