Among the best of contemporary jazz

I can't remember now how I discovered Happy Apple, but I'm glad I did. Their loofy, just-off sax lines and gallumphing rhythms hide some sophisticated structures, and their musicianship is excellent. Especially, I like they they vary textures and forms without gimmicks. Definitely among the best of the "new jazz." I've bought several of their albums now and they hold up very well on repeated listening.

Happy Apple... Genious!

words cannot express my euphoric state as i attended one of their concerts in SF. Originally attending their concert to see opener kneebody, i had no idea what to expect from this band so cleverly named happy apple, which i believe is so contrary to what they produce. 3 men who shouldve taken more than a billion years to come together magically coagulated to produce their brainchild that is happy apple, each playing with the same imagery in mind and with the same intention behind every note and space in time. There was never a moment where one band member found themselves on the wrong letter of the wrong word of the wrong paragraph of the wrong page from the rest of the group. Happy Apple, i am glad to say that i will be following you for the rest of your days as a group. Although recorded sessions just dont compare to your live energy and presence, i give it a 10/10! d(-_-)b p.s. you will never play at the grammy's. sorry. ;)

More accessible Happy Apple

If your looking for a good starting point for this band this might be it. The music on this release is somewhat less deconstructed and generally more melodic. That's not to say its easy listening though by any chance. But if your up to the challenge, this band offers a great musical reward. Then again, it might just not be your thing, and that's cool too.
The song writing and musicianship is top notch. Dave King's drumming in particular is world shattering. One of my favorite bands, not just in jazz, but any genre. I got to catch them at Joes's Pub in NYC touring in support of this cd and it was a phenomenal show. Don't miss them if you have the chance, as they do not tour often.

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Named after a child's toy from the 1960s, jazz trio Happy Apple was formed in Minneapolis, MN, in 1996 by saxophonist Michael Lewis and drummer David King, with bassist Erik Fratzke joining soon after. Their clever and melodic small-combo improvisations have been termed "jazz punk," but Happy Apple has a grasp of the entire history of jazz, and the trio's elegant free-bop compositions are full of haunting melodies, delightful flashes of humor, and intelligent, coherent construction. Led by Lewis'...
