Ahead of the curve

Lil' Kim isn't for everyone (obviously) but she deserves credit for being ahead of the curve with Notorious KIM. This album, released way back in 2000, captures the sound of where rap music is heading now in 2008. Had this album been released a few years later or if Kim would've stayed with the sound (instead of trying to go back to her "hood" sound, which failed) her career would be in an entirely different place. NK incorporates techno, house, trance and pop sounds alongside Kim's perverse lyrics and spectactular flow. It took over ten years for her first album Hardcore to receive its due and it looks like it will take even longer for NK to receive its due. This album isn't perfect but most ahead of their time albums stumble a little.

Easily Lil' Kim's Best

This is the first album of Kim's I ever purchased, and after buying all the others this is still my absolute favorite. The songs go into various genres at points and the lyrics are always entertaining. If you're looking to get into Kim's music, this is the album to do it with. Best tracks: Custom Made, S**k My D**k, How Many Licks, No Matter What They Say, Hold On, I'm Human

As the album's title implies, Kim was a rarity among female rappers -- one who not only concentrated on edgy hardcore rap but also explicit sexuality, two territories that had long been the province of male rappers. Of course, Kim's near-pornographic sexuality and hard-edged rhythms made her an anomaly within hip-hop, but Hard Core...
