iTunes Review

There’s an obvious touch of irony to the title of Missy Higgins’ third studio album, her first release in five years. The Australian singer/songwriter has acknowledged her bouts of depression and disillusionment with show business, topics that inform some of her latest songs (most notably “Everybody Is Waiting”). Considering all that, The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle is remarkably uplifting in sound and feel. With Nashville popmeister Brad Jones and fellow singer/songwriter Butterfly Boucher handling production, Higgins delivers vibrant performances that show off her compelling alto vocals to full advantage. Her tunes are smart, heartfelt, and self-revelatory, often suggesting the classy chanteuse stylings of Dusty Springfield and Sandie Shaw. “Set Me on Fire,” “Hello Hello," and “Unashamed Desire” invoke widescreen ’60 pop, while “Temporary Love” has the propulsive flow of an ‘80s dance hit. Higgins also does well in acoustic settings, like the bluesy “Watering Hole” and the countrified “If I’m Honest.” Lyrical themes of romantic deceit (“Tricks”), obsessive longing (“All in My Head”), and mortality (“Cooling of the Embers”) give these songs unusual depth.

This album

Quite recently I've become a huge fan of Missy Higgins. She is an amazing artist. She's so real, unlike most of the artists today. My favorite songs from this album are "Hello, Hello" and "Everyone's Waiting", but the entire album is great. Now that I can finally buy it, I'm happy.

With a flair for poignant ballads and pop/rock singles, Missy Higgins became one of Australia's most popular artists during the early 21st century. Her songwriting career began in Melbourne, where she attended boarding school and balanced her time between academics and music. Higgins' sister got ahold of "All for Believing," one of Missy's earliest songs, and mailed a copy to Australia's Triple J radio station without her sister's consent. The song ended up winning an unsigned artist competition...
