Album Review

Your Enemies Friends offer up a kind of post-hardcore/post-grunge-ish, high-energy guitar rock on You Are Being Videotaped; guitars are angular and distorted, basses pulse in a fuzzed tone, and drums hammer hard on the syncopation and backbeats. But, like many rock bands of the early 2000s, Your Enemies Friends sprinkle in a nice layer of keyboards on the bookends of You Are Being Videotaped. Your Enemies Friends seem to second-guess themselves in the middle of the record — almost showing that they can be varied and different and not giving in to their straight-up post-hardcore instincts, which makes for a bit of a schizophrenic listen. Though it has been said many times about many post-grunge bands, Your Enemies Friends have definitely listened to Nirvana records and/or Dave Grohl-related projects — the evidence lies in tracks like "Back of a Taxi," "Columnist," and "Unusual Signal." The mathy, metal riffage of "Excommunication List" is definitely a highlight, with its nice, quirky noise and dissonance that eventually drop into a Brit-rock Pink Floyd-ish chillout. You Are Being Videotaped is a decent record that moves all over the distorted guitar rock map, but Your Enemies Friends always seem to find their way back to their influences — which could prove an interesting tool for furthering their future releases.

you are being videotaped

I generally like all the Buddyhead bands...What can I say, the label knows good music... Your Enemies Friends is no exception. Good energy, great songs, great vibes. It's a little wierd to go from one crazy song to something soft, but there never was a rule that said an album had to flow perfectly.

Don't listen to DreamSphere

This album is an improvement over the already great Wiretap Ep, while the music is an aquired taste it is a great new twist on punk, grunge, and electronic music. If the band continues evolving they could soon be as good as The Icarus Line. By the way almost everything on Buddyhead is worth listening to, as one other reviewer said they have great taste in music.

One of All Time Greatest

This CD is the perfect blend of grunge, electronic, and post-hardcore. I feel stupid giving it those genre names since this CD creates its own genre, but songs such as "Easy Assault" and "You Are Being Videotaped" make it tough to nail it down. Great listen all the way through, must buy.

According to vocalist/guitarist Ronnie Washburn, the punky indie rock band Your Enemies Friends formed in Los Angeles "out of boredom." Early on, the band shared stages with the Promise Ring and the Dillinger Escape Plan. Buddyhead released their debut EP, The Wiretap, and the band relocated to Seattle. Unhappy with life in what they called "the suicide capital of...
