Album Review

Classically trained violinist Tracy Bonham emerged from Boston with her first major-label release, The Burdens of Being Upright. The album yielded a significant radio hit with the seething message "Mother Mother," which leads off the album. It raises the bar for the rest of the record and, although she doesn't quite match it, The Burdens of Being Upright is a riveting introduction. Bonham and bandmates tear through tracks like "Navy Bean" and "Bulldog" with energetic punk abandon. Bonham's lyrics are intelligent and her voice is powerful, sounding eerily like Liz Phair on songs like "Kisses," "Sharks Can't Sleep," and "Every Breath."

Tracy Rocks

This album is so much fun. Tracy seems angry and hostile, but has the guts to scream it you. This album is worth listening to enough to catch all the quirkey lyrics.

I love this record. I play it so much that I have gone thru 3 discs. I keep one in my office, oneat home and one in the car. Of course now I mostly listen to it on my iPod. It is a great collection of songs and her voice songs perfect. I like the quality of her voice and her singing style. You can compare her to whomever you want...she rocks it!! She is funny, compasionate and fired up all at the same time. Buy it and put it in heavy rotation. "Mother mother," "The One," & "Sharks Can't Sleep" are the standout trax.

Like Alanis Morissette and Liz Phair, Tracy Bonham made her name during the alternative boom of the mid-‘90s. Unlike those two songwriters, she did so by merging post-grunge with elements of classical music, drawing upon her violin skills in the process. The combination helped push her 1996 debut, The Burdens of Being Upright, to gold sales, and Bonham closed out the year with two Grammy nominations. Although her later albums didn’t fare quite so well, Bonham continued expanding her sound into a...
