Editors’ Notes

We named Best Coast’s studio debut, Crazy for You, the Alternative Breakthrough Album in iTunes Rewind 2010. Its sunny, often lo-fi sounds were like a blissful blast of Phil Spector–produced pop mixed with lovelorn lyrics. For Best Coast's forthcoming follow-up, The Only Place, the Cali-based crew (consisting of core members Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno) teamed with famed producer Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Kanye West). The lead single, “The Only Place,” kick-starts the affair with a cheery ode to the band’s home state; it's sprinkled with surf-rock bobs and lyrics that invite you to meet Best Coast at the beach. This rolls into a succinct, melodic rocker (“Why I Cry”), which features Cosentino’s characteristic train-of-thought lyrics.

Customer Reviews

Such a disappointment.

Cosentino's lyrics on this album are more insightful than her previous work, as well as focused on a heavier side of love and living. The polished sound offers a clearer listening of Cosentino's addicting voice; the tones are thicker and creamier, stronger and honest. Bruno's plucky, smart guitar is always a harmonious spouse to the new words and catchy rhythms, translating the lyrics' meanings into another language.

A Better Best Coast

I'm liking a this album a lot more than their debut. It does have a more solemn feel, minus "the only place," but I sense more maturity than lack of creativity. Tracks 8 & 11 are amongst their best in general.

Bethany Cosentino was no stranger to the stage when she began working on recordings with bandmate Bobb Bruno under the name Best Coast in 2009. A former child actress, Cosentino had started writing songs in her teens, and had gained a strong online following by the time she was 17 thanks to a handful of squeaky-clean pop tunes she made available on her MySpace page under the nom de teen pop Bethany Sharayah. "I had interest from major labels," she said in a 2009 interview with PopSense. "And it was...
