Enter the Slasher House

Enter the Slasher House

As supergroups go, Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks—featuring Dave "Avey Tare" Portner of Animal Collective, former Dirty Projectors member Angel Deradoorian, and former Ponytail drummer Jeremy Hyman—is one of the more eccentric groupings. Inspired by '60s garage rock and novelty horror songs like "Monster Mash," the songs on Enter the Slasher House can be as dizzying as a carnival ride, full of squiggly riffs and clacking rhythms. Portner assumes vocal duties with Deradoorian backing him up. But as with much of Animal Collective's music, their voices are a means to some psychedelic end, deep-fried by effects like a Twinkie at the state fair. The single "Little Fang" is a groovy midtempo roller you can sing along to, which sharply contrasts bleating barrages like "A Sender" and "Strange Colores." Like a rickety rollercoaster, Slasher House isn't for the faint of heart—but fans of the players' other groups will find much to enjoy in these freaky experimental jams.
