Album Review

Any band that names itself with a pun based on the name of a font has automatic geek credibility. Cleveland noise rockers Times New Viking maintain that outside-hipster status with a defiance that threatens to turn into deliberate antipathy for any audience beyond the most committed lo-fi fetishists. The Paisley Reich is a forbiddingly noisy affair even by Cleveland avant-punk standards, sounding like it was recorded on a '70s-vintage cassette recorder in a concrete basement with a single microphone, this is a trebly blur of bratty-whiny vocals, feedback-laden guitar shards, needling synth stabs and lots and lots of cymbals. There are probably also drums, and possibly even bass, but the near-total lack of bottom end makes those instruments theoretical at best. Sounds like an artsy drag, right? Well, perversely, underneath all that noise and tape hiss is a load of punchy, catchy punk-pop songs with unexpectedly solid hooks and catchy tunes. There are a few pointless duds — the untitled track just before "Bad Looks" is just 12 seconds' worth of amplified fret buzz — but even the 56-second "Allegory Gets Me Hot" lives up to its excellent title with a sound partway between X-Ray Spex and early Guided by Voices. Once the listener makes it past the presentation, Paisley Reich is a highly entertaining listen.

Customer Reviews

Wall of sound - and that's a good thing

Saw TNV in Baltimore a little over a year ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. You turn up the CD loud and it's just like bein' there. I love the songs - but a little better production values would go a long way!

Columbus, not Cleveland

Times New Viking are from Columbus (not Cleveland as stated above) and are a band for the city to be proud of.

Good band, alright album, but too high price

Love this band, especially two of their other albums that have higher production values. But for the super-short length and garbage-quality/sub-amatuer production, this album needs a lower price. Drop it down to $4.99, cause that's about what I would consider fair pay for it.

In the mean time, just pick up a few songs here, particullarly the Skull Versus Wizard and We Got Rocket.

Biography

Formed: 2004 in Columbus, OH

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Much like Guided by Voices, Times New Viking are a noisy, lo-fi indie rock band from Ohio who made the leap from the long-running indie Siltbreeze Records to the higher-profile Matador label. Unlike Guided by Voices, whose hissy, distortion-heavy sound masked a knack for traditional '60s-influenced pop hooks and surreal lyrical wordplay,...
