11 Songs, 46 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

The Punch Brothers’ fourth album leaves no doubt: they aren't just newgrass, they're nextgrass. Or more accurately, prog-grass, as exemplified by “Familiarity,” the opening track here. It's an epic, 10-minute suite brimming with bold shifts in tempo, meter, and mood. If it were played on synths and electric guitars instead of banjo and mandolin, it wouldn't sound out of place on an album by vintage Genesis (or at least Radiohead, whom the band covered on their last album). But the PB's still find time to strut their classical chops on a few inspired pieces by Debussy and Scriabin, and they show off their roots cred with a fluid take on the traditional tune "Boll Weevil."

What is there to say?

The Punch Brothers have such a knack for crafting beautiful melodies. From that and their obvious musicianship, all I really need to say is pre-order now. There will be no regretting it!

Thanks Punch Bros

When I was a kid, certain musicians or groups made me want to play and explore music. For example, Dave Matthews led me to the jazz scene and caused me pick up a guitar. Seeing Bela Fleck open for DMB made me want to play banjo and got me into bluegrass and classical. It had been a long time since a band had inspired me like that before I found Punch Bros via Yo Yo Ma>Goat Rodeo>Chris Thile>Punch Bros. Thanks Punch Bros for working so hard to stay exploratory and not fall victim to the wrong kind of success. I sincerely appreciate it. Another great album I will listen to a thousand times and I hope very much I get to see you here in Austin.

"Heaven's A Punch Brothers Album Produced by T Bone Burnett..."

Punch Brothers. The definition of everything good that still remains in American music. This album is no exception. This just might be their masterpiece. Only time and many enjoyable listens will tell.
