About Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra dates back to 1906, and is Australia's longest-running professional orchestra. Consisting of 100 players, the orchestra was founded by conductor Alberto Zelman. It became one of the radio orchestras of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (now Australian Broadcasting Corporation) in 1934, and in 1945 was renamed the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, only to revert back to the name Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 1965. Prominent among its conductors was Hiroyuki Iwaki, the ensemble's longest-serving conductor; Andrew Davis, conductor since 2012; and several guest conductors, including Markus Stenz and Simone Young. The MSO has toured New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, China, Europe, and Russia, and in 2014 appeared for the first time at The BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
