America Keeps Chasing the Rainbow, thanks to Jeff Larson

We all owe a debt of thanks to Jeff Larson for finding these recordings and assembling another superb America album. (And by the way, if you like America, you’ll also like Jeff Larson’s own recordings. He has, by my count, 8 albums of his own, all good—although one, The Barrens, is all-instrumental, solo guitar, and I’m assuming it’s by the same Jeff Larson. My favorite Larson albums are Swimming in the Make Believe and Left of a Dream.) As for America’s Lost & Found, it fits right in with the rest of Beckley & Bunnell’s recordings. I think the best songs on the album are the ones with classic America harmonies: “Driving,” “All in All,” “The Quiet Inside,” “Don’t Let Her Close Your Eyes,” and “Out on the Street.” All the songs here were apparently composed by Beckley, and you’ll find his usual reflection on his life and romance. “Don’t Let Her Close Your Eyes” is full of self-questioning reminiscent of “Chasing the Rainbow.” My wife and I attended an America live concert last summer, and these guys were terrific. And I have to say, their songs wear the test of time more than almost any other music artists I know of, even as they reflect the contexts in which they were composed. Keep chasing that rainbow, fellas.

Nice work....

Great to hear some new America. I would not consider this to be one of their best, but still a nice listen. The best track, in my mind and on the same level as the early days, is "The Quiet Inside". Hopefully we will be able to enjoy more from this iconic group in the near future.
