Album Review

On The Real Thing, her sixth studio album (not counting two Christmas releases), Vanessa Williams switches from the '70s soul covers that made up 2005's Everlasting Love to a mix of adult contemporary originals and faithful interpretations. While Rob Mathes produced the entirety of the previous set, the labor here is divided between him and Rex Rideout (Boney James, Will Downing), as well as Keith Thomas and Babyface, both of whom go way back with Williams. With four people sharing the producer's chair, the whole album nonetheless carries a relaxed, serene feel, even when it is at its most active and spirited. The highlights tend to come with the Latin material — including the title track, written by Stevie Wonder for Sergio Mendes, and "If There Were No Song," switching between a lush ballad and splashes of percussion and horns — which Williams pulls off with natural ease. It's not likely to raise anyone's body temperature, but it's too welcoming to ignore.

Sexy And Classy

FINALLY!!! An Adult Contemporary Album That Is Lush, Classic, Romantic....And In A Word...BREATHLESS!! A Collection Of Music That Is Manhattan, New York With Late Night Rooftop Dinners, Elegant Attire, And The Essence Of Fairy Tale Dreams. I Have ALWAYS Been A Fan Of Vanessa Williams And When I Learned That She Was (FINALLY!!!) Releasing A Jazz-esque Set Of Songs, I Could Not Wait! I Am A Big Fan Of Hers And This Music, This Kind Of Music And Her Voice Should Be Cherished! Great Songs!

All This... and Beauty Too!..

It's easy to forget... with watching "Ugly Betty" , seeing her fab comedic acting chops, seeing her work those dresses quite fiercely... that Vanessa can really sing y'all! I'm glad she didn't try some forced-fit, youth r&b, click track mess. She's a grown woman making beautiful, grown-up music. Nice job, Vanessa!

Music Lover

When Vanessa Williams began her singing career, she was known chiefly as the Miss America pageant winner who'd been forced to renounce her title for posing in Penthouse magazine. Williams not only put the scandal behind her, she all but obliterated it, turning out a series of slick, sophisticated hits that made her one of the most popular adult contemporary R&B singers of her time. In addition to her broad crossover appeal, she established a parallel acting career in both film and television, and...
