Album Review

The Sea and Cake's buoyant debut is a breath of fresh air, an utterly distinctive and innovative work that expands the scope of frontman Sam Prekop's work in the great Shrimp Boat to incorporate a new fascination with Afro-Caribbean rhythms and textures. Recorded by Brad Wood, the album simply glows — Prekop's dry vocals and free-associative lyrics skip along a shimmering and lushly pastoral backdrop that nimbly fuses pop, soul, jazz, and even prog rock; tracks like "Jacking the Ball," "Flat Lay the Water," and "Showboat Angel" are as seductive as they are elusive.

Solid Debut Album

My favorite song on the album is Jacking the Ball. To be honest, I found this band through a commercial that featured Jacking the Ball in it, and I hunted for it for days. A pleasant surprise.

great back drop to a mellow, lazy day

I've had this album for about 10 years. First heard it at a friends house just hanging out on the porch - enjoying the day. I love it. It's mellow but unique and interesting. The whole album is great but I have a particular affection for "show boat angel". Definately a keeper and an album I've enjoyed listening to again and again through the years.

Great album to have stuck in your head

I listened to this album obsessively while on a long trekking trip in Nepal. Back then, I had to put it on TAPE (can you believe it? Years before iPods...) and carry it around for a month. I couldn't listen to it enough and it was wonderfully catchy and pleasant to have running through my head as I tromped up trails. Absolutely essential for any fan of Chicago music.

Biography

Formed: 1993 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The Sea and Cake are a post-rock supergroup of sorts, comprised of luminaries from the Chicago independent scene. The band is led by singer/guitarist Sam Prekop, who, along with bassist Eric Claridge, was an alumnus of the frequently brilliant Shrimp Boat. After that group's dissolution, Prekop and Claridge were offered the opportunity to embark on a new project and hastily recruited ex-Coctails guitarist Archer Prewitt and Tortoise drummer John McEntire before entering the studio.
