A strong effort, but misses the mark

I love Latyrx, and by extension most things that Lateef and Lyrics Born touch independent of one another. When I heard them together again on "The Last Trumpet" from Later That Day (and how good it was), I hoped they would revive Latyrx, After 10 more years they finally deliver this, and my expectations were off the charts. That said, I must confess to feeling that something is missing on this album. The first Latyrx album was to my ear a very unique effort that was experimental, minimalistic and primal. This album is a departure from that sound, and it suffers for it. There is a lot to be heard, but in my opinion it is too much. It is over-layered, and busy, and is paired with rhymes that I found to be uninspiring.
The songs are disjointed, and it is difficult to get a sense of flow to the album. I will not simply shelve it, I am determined to hammer away at it to see if it resonates with me more over time, but for now I must say I am decidedly disappointed.

Well worth the wait.

Hip hop heads rejoice! The Bay Area's Latyrx, are back... Solid bumping beats, amazing lyrical delivery, and fantastic guest collaborations make for an album that's def gonna be getting a lot of play!

Members of the prodigiously talented Solesides/Quannum collective, Latyrx went sorely underrecognized for their restlessly experimental brand of hip-hop. Their lone album was far too eccentric for the masses, but even in underground circles, it fell prey to poor distribution (it went out of print twice) and poor timing (Quannum mates DJ Shadow and Blackalicious hadn't yet secured their status with hip-hop fans). The name Latyrx was a combination of its members' performing monikers, Lateef the Truth...
