Album Review

Rush is one band with an overabundance of live CDs, home videos, and DVDs under their belt. But with a full-length live DVD issued in 2003 (Rush in Rio), was it overkill releasing another one just two years later? Realizing this, the band tried a slightly different approach on R30 (titled after the name of their 30th anniversary tour): one disc of a complete live show and a second disc of rarely seen archival footage. Recorded on September 24, 2004, in Frankfurt, Germany, disc one does a fine job of capturing modern-day Rush in concert. As with their last few tours, the veteran Canadian trio pulled out a forgotten nugget or two that hadn't been played in a dog's age, and this time out, the forgotten Grace Under Pressure gem "Between the Wheels" received an airing. But the real highlight is the all-instrumental opening sequence, which incorporates riffs and passages from "Finding My Way," "Anthem," "Bastilles Day," "A Passage to Bangkok," "Cygnus X-1," and "Hemispheres." Disc two, though, is what makes R30 a truly special item for longtime fans. It turns out that Geddy Lee's brother scoured the Rush archives for rare performances, and he did a splendid job, as evidenced by great, '70s-era performances of "Finding My Way," "Circumstances," and "La Villa Strangiato," among others. Also included are some interesting and uncommon interviews, tops being a Q&A with Lee from 1979, one of the entire band together circa 1981, and separate interviews with all three circa 1990 (the latter of which covers the group's entire career up until that point). R30 will hopefully set a precedent for what other veteran rock bands should aim for on future DVD releases. [The deluxe edition includes two audio CDs of the Frankfurt performance, plus two Dunlop guitar picks and a backstage pass.]

Nice soundtrack to a 30 year career

Rush has made no bones about a loyal fandom with limited airplay and amazing talent. This pack (along with the available DVD) is a gift to the fans who have supported them for 30 years. Though missing about 8 songs that were performed on this tour, you can find live versions of those songs (Bravado, YYZ, By Tor, La Villa, etc) on 'Rush in Rio'. This set spans the band's thirty year career with an opening Overture of one song from each of the bands first 5 albums (Rush, Fly By Night, Caress of Steel, 2112, A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres), it leads into The Spirit of Radio from the bands 6th Album Permanent Waves. The rest of the show hits on the different eras of the band. The Synth driven 80's and return to a power trio 90's. Along the way, several covers from the bands 2002 release Feedback pays homage to the Who, Yardbirds and Cream, all of which are inspiration to the bands roots.

great summary of 30 years

What can you say about Rush? Despite being ignored (at best) or lambasted (at worst) by the critics, they have continued to challenge themselves and their audiences with innovative music. This retrospective doesn't seem to have the energy of Rio from the fans' perspective (have you ever been to South America?), but Rush plays with their trademark craftmanship. I do like Neil's solo as well sa the live covers off Feedback. These guys simply never disappoint. It's a downright crime that they're not in the R&R HOF. I like The Pretenders, for example, but their body of work simply can't be compared ot that of Rush. These guys just plane rock--and have for 30 years.

Rush strong at 30!

Soundtrack to the bands R30 dvd release. If you hated Rush in Rio due to the crowd noise, you will love this well mixed recording. Well balenced between the insturments this recording showcases a tight band of musicians still at the top of their game. Gems here are Between The Wheels(never recorded before) and Earthshine which holds promise as to where the future lies. Der Trommler is a great showcase for Neil Peart who is perhaps the greatest drummer alive. They treat their cover songs with great earnestness and respect.
