Album Review

With Gastr del Sol, David Grubbs and co-conspirator Bundy K. Brown head off into improvised landscapes both minimal and emotionally charged. The isolated, wandering pianos on "A Jar of Fat" and "Eye Street" toy with the definition of song, paying special attention to repetition, or the lack of it. The entire record is dominated by a loose, wavering melodic gravity that will challenge some, but listeners unimpressed with the many "underground" artists driven more by attitude than honesty and expression will find Serpentine Similar quite refreshing.

Landmark album!! David Grubb's unsung hero!!

First of all, in regards to the itunes review, DAVID GRUBBS WAS NOT IN SLINT!!! Although he was in a band called "Squirrel Bait" which included members of Slint, he was not in Slint himself, (I'm sure he would appreciate people knowing that). For more history on that, look up "Squirrel Bait" on Wikipedia. Grubbs was and is a master all himself!!! Better to relate this record to his last band before Gastr, which was "Bastro". Preferably the "Sing the Troubled Beast" record which was one of the greatest post punk/indie rock records ever recorded!! A masterpiece of creativity and one that's comparable to the famed "Spiderland" record by "Slint". Although be it odd, for some reason is not available on itunes. Which only serves to make it all the more intriguing. But as for "Serpintine Similar", this record has always been and should be required listening for anybody who wants to be creative, in any kind of art. So get it!!!

This is a very avant-garde record, and it's built so subtly that it can be easily overlooked. Listen to it, but then don't be done with it.

Gastr del Sol was the most prominent vehicle of indie rock stalwart David Grubbs, a former member of Squirrel Bait and Bastro. With Gastr del Sol, the Louisville, KY-born vocalist/guitarist/pianist's evolution from conventional rock music into more intricate and sophisticated tone patterns became complete; debuting with the 1993 EP The Serpentine Similar, the group -- a shifting aggregate of talents initially including bassist Bundy K. Brown and drummer John McEntire -- began exploring a new approach,...
