I believe this is one of the best albums of the 90s that didn't get so much as a whiff for some unknown reason to me. Grant Lee knew this album was the group’s swan song and he went out screaming.
This album is one on the cleanest sounding, well produced albums of its genre and was a great effort and a shame that it didn't garner more attention. I think this album's first misstep was the release of Truly, Truly as the first single. It's one of the weakest offerings here. There are far better radio friendly rock tunes here that would have translated into more airplay. The public's absolute rejection of that song all but killed any hope of any mass appeal. Seconds or Change Your Tune would have been more palatable tunes for radio play. And oh, a lack of support from Warner Bros. certainly was the final nail in the coffin too.
A Truly, Truly underrated and most underappreciated album of 1998. I still love it! It's still in heavy rotation on my iPod in 2010 and has one of the highest play counts in my iTunes library.

Seriuosly, am I the first to review this awesome effort?

I love this record. Every so often I remember I have it and break it out for continuous play until I burn out on it again. The countrified guitar and rocky anthems blend perfectly with GLP's whispery singing voice to make a great Sunday afternoon listening experience.

Wonderful textures in these songs

I was given this album as a gift. I knew nothing about Grant Lee Phillips before receiving the album, and haven't really looked at any of his other work. However, this album is absolutely a wonderful listen. I guess "Truly, Truly" was a minor hit, but almost all of the songs are a great. "Testimony" and "Fine How'd Ya Do" are my favorites, the latter paints a beautiful picture in lyrics and sound.

Years Active: '90s

Although heralded by the critics and championed by their musical peers, the '90s alternative/roots rock trio Grant Lee Buffalo failed to break through to the mainstream, despite strong songwriting and an original style. The band's leader was singer/guitarist/songwriter Grant Lee Phillips — born in 1963 and raised in Stockton, CA, Phillips was equally influenced by rock music early on (David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Kiss) as well as country icons (Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, etc.). By the dawn of...
