Gorgeous melodies and voice, no matter your faith!

Doug Burr has recorded a beautiful masterpiece in The Shawl. Interpreting the Psalms in music -- the way they were originally written -- produces some of the most peaceful, joyous, and heartfelt music I've heard in a long, long while. Doug's guitar and voice complement each other perfectly. The setting -- the old building seen on the cover, in tiny Tehuacana, TX -- adds to the ambiance with the sound of the wind and the birds in the background through the open windows. For the record, the Psalms sung here are: 1. 6 (I am weary with my sighing) 2. 76 (God is known in Judah) 3. 73 (Surely God is good to Israel) 4. 91 (A thousand may fall) 5. 58 (The righteous will rejoice) 6. 80 (And we will be saved) 7. 77 (My voice rises to God) 8. 78 (Which we have heard and known) 9. 11 (In the Lord I take refuge) Excellent work, Mr Burr.

different music + different tone = a great accomplishment

I bought this album, expecting the builds and melodies that can be found in his previous efforts. On the first listen, I was quite disappointed. Sure, the instrumentation sounded spot-on, but the entire album just seemed painstakingly...bland. It wasn't until the second or third listen that I realized this album was a masterpiece. Indeed, this is a mellow album, but it's also one of the most passionate works I own. Doug geniusly uses the poetic language in the Psalms, perfectly constructing it into a sing-able, moving piece that calls Christians to worship. If you're looking for a well-crafted Doug Burr album, buy it, but don't anticipate the same thing you've always heard. If you like quiet-but-complex instrumentation, buy it. If you're a Christian, buy this album to both worship the Lord and meditate on the words of Scripture. If you think Christianity is ridiculous, then consider the entire endeavor a work of fiction and buy it anyway.
