Smart, Sexy Pop

So we Yanks finally get a chance to hear some of the most unabashedly awesome musical confections in recent memory. Yes, it's dance-pop. Yes, it's a girl band manufactured from a UK television programme. But what people don't realize is that the five talented bombshells on the album cover are muses to one of the most creative musical production houses in the world: Xenomania. Xenomania works their magic on every track, from the genre-defying debut single "Sound Of The Underground" to the inexplicably sly "Something Kinda Ooooh." Is "No Good Advice" a feminist "My Sharona?" Those first two measures leave no doubt. Is "Biology" a "Bohemian Rhapsody" for Gen Y? You may not love it at first, but somewhere around its twentieth spin, you can't imagine life before it. And as far as covers go, Girls Aloud have pretty much cornered the market. Their "I Think We're Alone Now" brings a new meaning to the word 'epic,' while "Jump" defies logic by flirting with the same greatness of the Pointer Sisters' original. This disc is evidence that "pop" is not a dirty word. It doesn't have to be sugary and trite; it can be as daring, innovative, and sexy as rock 'n roll. And damn, do these girls look good doing it.

Girls Aloud

Why doesn't itunes have the new album "Can't Speak French" or the HOT song "Call the Shots"???

Finally, the Aloud is available in America! This singing group has produced many hits in the UK and internationally in the last 3 years, and unfortunately, they've never released a single Stateside. At least we can now get the brilliance of Girls Aloud, now. These girls aren't as formulaic as the Spice Girls, but they each have individual sounding voices with their own timbres and textures. Their music team at Xenomania is brilliant, their songs are catchy and cute. Their greatest hits album is not to be missed!

Formed: November, 2002 in England

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Despite their prefabricated formation through a television program called Popstars: The Rivals, Girls Aloud achieved both mainstream success and widespread critical acclaim in their native England. Through Popstars' process of elimination, Girls Aloud's membership amounted to Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, Cheryl Cole (née Tweedy), and Kimberley Walsh. The group took shape in November 2002, and soon began a streak of Top Ten singles that broke a record for all-woman groups and remained...
