A Fitting Title

Dublab is fast becoming one of my favorite medium labels. They clearly give their signed artists a lot of room for creative control and encourage a lot of collaboration. This compilation is an excellent example of the label's work. Languis and Fer Chloca open up with "The Sky Below" - a piece that feels almost saccharin until you hear the lyrics. The contrast is incredibly effective, and a good rosetta stone for how the rest of the album will feel. The most disappointing song on the album is "Shen," but even this offbeat, fast-tempo rap has its moments. And the clear winner for most enchanting and replayable song is Dntel's "If I Don't Return." Everything from the recurrent opening sample through the dizzying lyrical overlays merits several consecutive listens. The pieces "Seathrough Dolphin Smile" and "Chord, Pts. 1&2" offer a sturdy instrumental relief to the other songs, most of which have very complicated lyrics. With that said, I have to admit this album is certainly not for everyone. You have to come to it with at least a generic appreciation for electronica to get your money's worth. If that's the case, grab it, put it on your iPod, and listen to it the next time you have an hour-long drive ahead of you.
