Never heard Wendy sing like that!

Alpha is down to two people: Corin Dingley, one of the original songwriters, and Wendy Stubbs, one of several vocalists who appeared on previous Alpha projects. Unsurprisingly, the sound here can be more spare than on past albums. While I do miss some of the rich electronic arrangements and varied voices of the past, Corin and Wendy have made up for the loss by reaching new heights in melody and vocal range. If you liked the bittersweet piano melody of Blue Autumn (albeit sung by Helen White) on their previous album, you will love this album, which includes several attempts to take that sound and push it further, most of which succeed. A few songs, such as Surely and Stumbled, fall victim to silly lyrics and vocal-heavy arrangements, but these are the exceptions; overall, this is a great album. The best tracks are the ones where Wendy shows her pipes and passion like never before: Burn Me Again, Silver Bullet and A Little Poison. A must-have for any Alpha fan, and for anyone who digs downtempo music with haunting melodies.

Not great, but worth the purchase

With nearly all of her previous work with Alpha exceptional, I always found myself wishing for an entire album of just her. I was somewhat disappointed to find that it seems the reason for only a few songs per album is that they couldn't quite fill a whole one. Ironically, unlike a fellow reviewer, I feel that Surely and Stumbled are actually by far the best songs on the album, and most accurately reflect the "Alpha" sound I was hoping for.
