iTunes Review

Smile is firmly entrenched as a great album that never was; 35 years after the fact, historians and archeologists were still trying to put the pieces together. It was intended as the follow-up to the landmark Pet Sounds and was meant to further establish Brian Wilson as the creative better to Lennon and McCartney. But Wilson lost his way; he became obsessed with the process and couldn't finalize his magnum opus. (Dissent within The Beach Boys didn’t help.) While there's no way to know what the “final” version of this album would be, this exhaustive collection—which features work spread over 80 sessions in nine months—gives us a chance to eavesdrop on the process. Wilson’s ambitions come closest to fruition on what constitutes the first “disc.” But the purpose of this release is to satisfy the hardcore Beach Boys fan, who'll thrill to the 34 pieces of “Heroes and Villains,” the five parts of “Do You Like Worms,” the eight-plus minutes of the “Smile Backing Vocals Montage,” and the 24 parts of “Good Vibrations” that not only provide fantastic music but incredible insights into Wilson’s artistic process.

One of the Greatest Albums (N)ever Made

Brian Wilson was an absolute genius. There’s really no arguing that fact. Had this album been finished it would have been hailed as one of the greatest and most influential of all time, right up there with Pet Sounds. This album is incredibly unique, I’ve never heard anything quite like it, and this is as close to Wilson’s original vision for the album as we’re ever going to hear. So buy it already! The only bad thing about getting into Beach Boys albums like SMiLE and Pet Sounds is that after you really get into them nothing else ever sounds quite as good. This is a masterpiece.

The Greatest Album of All Time

Yes I think this is the greatest album of all time, and then comes Sgt. Pepper by The Beatles. Why? Don't get me started. Keep one thing in mind - This album was not finished in 1967, when it would have come out. If you want to get a close approximation as to what it would have been like in 1967, purchase tunes 1-19. But I think Surf's Up would have been the last song and Good Vibrations would have been somewhere in the middle. Hey - get into the spirit - Make your own list of songs, in the order that makes sense to you. In that sense, this is the first interactive album. It's a lot of fun. Much lighter than Pet Sounds. A very light and happy album. Enjoy!!

The Voice of God

Brian said that one day he'd write music that people pray to, and he wasn't exaggerating. This is the closest he came to achieving his goal, and it is truly breathtaking. Although it is unfinished, there is enough material here to grip your soul and fundamentally change your perception of music. Brash claims, I know, but really there aren't words to describe this music. Please buy it! If not for the love of The Beach Boys, then for the betterment of your soul.

Beginning their career as the most popular surf band in the nation, the Beach Boys finally emerged by 1966 as America's preeminent pop group, the only act able to challenge (for a brief time) the overarching success of the Beatles with both mainstream listeners and the critical community. From their 1961 debut with the regional hit "Surfin'," the three Wilson brothers -- Brian, Dennis, and Carl -- plus cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine constructed the most intricate, gorgeous harmonies ever...
