Album Review

The cover art for the Gentle People's 1997 Rephlex full-length — the band in full space race/cocktail-chic regalia standing before a bubblegum-pink background, their name gloriously rendered in plump, soap-bubble lettering — is perhaps the best indication of what to expect here. The group's bluntingly non-threatening concoction of sugar-drenched cheese — all fluffy exotica, 101 Strings-style muzak, and wispy, wordless backing vocals — is tough to get through even two tracks of without either an exceedingly strong will or a good stiff drink.

I actually have been trying to find the original copy of this LP and so happy this is on Itunes. This is groundbreaking psychedelic electronic fabulousness. For those of you who missed this the first time around, pick up this music. It changed my life for the better. Sassabone

The Free Design for the 21st Century

Sugar drenched cheese seems a bit harsh for a group with the word gentle in their name. Fluffy exotica is a better term. They remind me of an updated The Free Design. In a world of extremism, it's refreshing to hear just good pleasant music. They're not simple--the arrangements are very complex and layered. The songs segue together, so I suggest buying the entire album. It's "good mood" music and it's good "mood music."

StoryTime and Sweets

In a blender of soap bubbles, glitter and artifical fabrics emerges the bedazzled butterfly called "Travel Bug". Who dares you on an adventure, a "Journey" that takes you to many new exciting avenues into all the "Worlds Of Love." "Travel Bug" laughs while tossing a sleepy slanted smile thats quite "A Close Encounter" in the sugary Relaxation Central." Once there, you along with her discover the proper way for to embark on a "Dream" thru "Le Tunnel de L' amour." Ah...Travel Bug, shes such a character, her invention and request to sample her latest cocktail, the lovely "Tiki Mix" is quite tempting but one must always venture back home and not "Stay" to long doddling. What if I left the "Emotion Heater" on? How terrible would I feel if the flat burned and I was forced to make a shabby "Outro?" Alas thats "The Soundtrack of Life" or was that sweet "Laura's Theme, who knows "Travel Bug" she yawns something quite differently to every individual, ahem.

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Tri-continental ambient lounge group the Gentle People are a bizarre amalgam of influences and affinities, combining the esoteric club culture of the 1990s with the cocktails-and-tiki-trinkets kitsch of the 1950s, hitting just about every opportunity for nostalgic, cheesball second-hand embarrassment in between. Signed in the U.K. to Richard "Aphex Twin" James' Rephlex imprint since 1995, the group's relaxed brand of sugar-coated, vocal-based easy listening is a far cry from the typically abrasive...
