Prelude to the "New Thing" in Jazz

Ornette Coleman started recording in Los Angeles after relocating from Fort Worth. This is his very first session as a leader, and it sounds like traditional bop-oriented jazz with some "eccentric" qualities here and there. I think it's important to hear Ornette evolve and develop before you plunge into "Free Jazz" or "This is Our Music". This way you can see how he was thinking in 1957/58 and get an acoustic image of his music.

One of the most important (and controversial) innovators of the jazz avant-garde, Ornette Coleman gained both loyal followers and lifelong detractors when he seemed to burst on the scene in 1959 fully formed.
