Michael Packer's new release "The Sunny Side of Me" is special. The cover-art and lyrics of the title song is created by 8 year old Gabby Kasper from Albany, NY. Packer returns to his early singer/songwriter folk/country roots of Papa Nebo and Free Beer, with songs about love, love lost, missed opportunities, and about his beloved city, New Orleans. (The Free Beer and Papa Nebo compilations are currently in release by Iris Music Group) This album has nine songs, six new originals by Michael, two by top-5 Grammy winning Nashville songwriter, Hugh Prestwood “Dorothy” & “Time. Time, Time”, and one by Folk icon Paul Siebel “Pinto Pony”. Siebel is the composer of the hit song, “Louise”, recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and Emily Lou Harris. “Sunny Side of Me” is the follow album release on the Iris Music Group label of the popular “Best of The Michael Packer Blues Band” and captures the diversity of Michael Packer’s broad and deep talents. Of Gabby Kasper, Michael explains, “The daughter of one of my oldest friends came to me with the lyric of “Sunny Side” and it just knocked me out. I had to write a song for it and based my new album around it. I love her artwork too.” Hugh Prestwood’s “Dorothy” tells the story of Dorothy Gale of the Wizard of Oz in the years after she left OZ and returned to Kansas. “No way can you stay in Kansas, once you’ve been to Oz”, the lyric reads. This is the first male version of this song which has been recorded by Judy Collins, Jackie DeShannon, Amanda McBroom and others. “Time, Time, Time”, was originally recorded by Free Beer in the Nouveau Chapeau album. A fan recently wrote, “Michael Packer is the best kept secret in the U.S.” If that’s the case, he is one of the great American musical treasures.
