Album Review

My Morning Jacket is a four-piece band from Louisville, KY, led by singer/songwriter Jim James. The songs on Tennessee Fire (Darla 1999) evoke warm (and somewhat lonely) memories of a gothic country night. Electric and acoustic guitars, harmonica, lap-steel, drums and bass all join his unique (Neil Young meets Wayne Coyne) voice in a huge pool of reverb. At first you wonder if the sound will overtake the songs, but after the first chorus you realize that the beauty of these simple and emotive songs is only enhanced by the addition of this effect, and by the end of the first song, you can't even tell that it's there. Released to (world) wide critical acclaim, Tennessee Fire provides proof (200 proof) that heartfelt American music is alive and well, and living in KY. A must for anyone who loves the sound of alt-country mixed with wide-open spaces.

Good ol' Days of MMJ

If you have ventured this far into the catalogue of MMJ albums, then I commend you. This album is wildly different from the "heaver" Z and Evil Urges. The Tennessee Fire, along with MMJ’s live "Okonokos" are my favorite MMJ albums. The only way I can think of describing these songs is: They have heart. "I Will Be There When You Die" is an undeniably moving song, "War Begun", "The Dark", "The Bear", and "Its About Twilight Now" are personal favorites. If you are looking for an album similar to Z or Evil Urges this is not it, but If you are looking for well written, soul-bearing songs that will make you feel something, it is hard to beat the songs on The Tennessee Fire.

"Don't try to tell me there's another boy..."

AWESOME album! Me and my buds use to stay up late with my door wide open facing the beautiful San Diego skyline enjoying the cool summer air, drinking beer, smoking cigarettes (among other things) and just chillin'. Really brings back a lot of memories. Very special album indeed, from begining to end. "Heartbreakin Man" got it going and all night we'd jam and sing along. Jim James is my boy> Every song is so emotional in its raw power. A very near and dear album to me. I hope some of you out there feel the same. BUY IT!

All of these songs are good. They make ya feel like flyin'.

Genre: Alternative

Starting in the late '90s and throughout the 2000s and 2010s, My Morning Jacket expanded on their rock and country roots, embracing everything from neo-psychedelia to funk, prog, and reggae in their sonic experimentation. By the time Evil Urges arrived in mid-2008, they had successfully molded themselves into Kentucky's answer to Wilco: a band rooted in alt-country and rock & roll, but given to sonic experimentation and unexpected genre changes at every turn. My Morning Jacket's de facto leader...
