EDITORS’ NOTES

Drummer Otis Brown III impresses on his debut solo album, The Thought of You. Brown makes room for jazz, hip-hop, gospel, and a cover of Canadian country singer Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” featuring vocalist Gretchen Parlato. The album opens with “The Way (Truth and Life),” which features a muscular horn arrangement, Robert Glasper’s unmistakable touch on piano, and Ben Williams’ driving bass. Bilal lends vocals to “The Thought of You—Part 1,” a track that includes incisive trumpet from Keyon Harrold. The spotlight is on singer Nikki Ross for a gospel medley drenched with Shedrick Mitchell’s organ.
