Album Review

Iowan folksinger Iris DeMent returns with her ambitious sixth album, The Trackless Woods. Following up the warm-toned, Southern sounds of 2012's Sing the Delta, DeMent takes an unusual turn, adapting 18 poems by 20th century Russian poet Anna Akhmatova to music using little more than her piano and tremulous voice. Additional strains of guitar, pedal steel, and dulcimer accompany these windswept, often tragic songs, which were captured over a period of five days by co-producer Richard Bennett in the singer's living room. Dark in tone and intimate in presentation, The Trackless Woods is unique in DeMent's catalog.

this is great!

wow, this album is worth the wait. what wonderful songs and performances; the piano was mixed perfect with Iris' voice. most of the songs are almost spiritual. my favorite is " not with deserters ", you
need to check it out. a very strong effort from a great artist!

Ms. DeMent has such a unique style, heartfelt, personal and above all musical.
I only wish iTunes would provide the digital booklet which comes with the release, background, biography, text all so important to an artist, are missing. Regardless, buy this beautiful collection of the record of human emotion and experience ! I hope not to wait another twenty years for more.
