Album Review

Like many of the other bands that were so instrumental in shaping the sound of black metal's second wave, the wildly influential Darkthrone also walked away from the genre to explore other realms of heaviness. Now, 15 albums in, the band that helped to define a genre with a trio of stellar releases in the '90s returns with The Underground Resistance, an album built from the sounds that influenced them so many years ago. Combining elements of doom, thrash, and speed metal, the album takes the Norwegian duo further away from the gnarly crust punk sounds they've been working in and toward the elemental building blocks that live at the heart of so much modern metal. Filled with galloping percussion, grinding riffs, and a sense of reckless abandon, Darkthrone's reverence for the sounds spawned by the New Wave of British Heavy Metal comes through loud and clear (but more loud). This makes The Underground Resistance an album that isn't just for fans of Darkthrone, but for all those who dare to call themselves fans of heavy metal, and it's a celebration of the rawness and heaviness that has made the genre a cathartic touchstone for so many people.

YO WAIT WHAT

Every time the Throne releases an album, there's usually buzz. Some undeserved, specially with the last few.
But THIS? Fenriz and NC break down your front door with battle axes of speed and proceed to assault your pathetic "kitchen" with the righteous heaviness. Soon, you're all drinking beer in what used to be your backyard, now ravaged by flames of roaring blackness. No cross unturned, no head unsnapped by the relentless headbanging that started when you first pressed "play."
YOU NEED THIS IN YOUR LIFE YESTERDAY!

Metal Perfection?

Yup. Just might be perfect. Such an amazing album. Buy this now, don't be dumb.

Awesome album

Buy on cd or vinyl. Great old school metal.

Biography

Formed: Oslo, Norway

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Of all the major second wave black metal bands to emerge from Norway's fertile breeding grounds during the early 1990s, only a handful — Mayhem, Emperor, Enslaved, Ulver — have achieved the same exalted status and world-wide recognition as the legendary Darkthrone; and arguably none has been as consistent or prolific in the decades that followed. Unlike the majority of their peers, Darkthrone largely refused to tinker with their refreshingly straightforward and savage black metal formula...
