A triumph

One of the most exciting, bold, original, and thought-provoking musicals I have ever seen. This soundtrack is beautiful, but if you want the full experience, head over to Ashland, Oregon, where you will be immersed in the creepy, haunting, hilarious, and sensitive world of the Unfortunates.

The Unfortunates are HERE!!

With a gut-wrenching haymaker (seriously, those fists are really big!) of genre mashing music, 3blind Mice and Casey Hurt have created the future of musical storytelling. A Blues-hiphop-rock opera that reminds you simultaneously of The Who’s Tommy, Tom Wait’s Blood Money, and Wynton Marsalis’s A Fiddler’s Tale; with a splash of Wu-Tang. The Unfortunates shifts gears through early 1900’s blues and gospel inspiration to mid-century feel good soul, rockabilly and love ballads and then to modern spoken word hip-hop battles and all the way back again. The story deals with the big questions: Life, Love, Death, addiction and disease, Revenge! Despite all of those heavies the music remains joyful and earnest.

This is a great introduction if you are planning on seeing the stage production (OSF ’13 and globally after that…). For those that are familiar with the play, it is fun to hear the different musical arrangements and some material that isn’t on stage.
This is not a “cast album”, however, so a sense of character can be harder to follow than the play.

Loving this album….brings the show right to your computer/headphones/life! We need more music like this in our lives.
