iTunes Review

Beneath Chris August’s easygoing exterior is a core of solid Christian faith, shown in lyrics rooted in the real-life struggles of modern-day believers. On the follow-up to his Dove-winning debut, No Far Away, the Texas singer/songwriter applies his folksy croon to a batch of pop/rock tunes framing sometimes playful, sometimes bittersweet lyrics. August is a keen student of ‘70s R&B, as evidenced by the mellow swing of “Let the Music Play” and the gospel simmer of “Amen.” There’s also a very contemporary acoustic-pop influence in tracks like the title number and “A Little More Jesus." The sound leans toward soft, but the message it conveys is firm in its convictions. The electronica-accented “Center of It” and the country-slanted “This Side of Heaven” find God amid the clutter and confusion of ordinary existence. August looks closely at a troubled marriage in “Restore” and offers a soulful praise number in “Truth Is Still True.” “1989” offers a youthful self-portrait set to a propulsive track. All told, The Upside of Down downplays melodrama in favor of heartfelt testimony delivered with polished craft and unshakable commitment.

Water Into Wine

Chris delivers again! I think the creativity on this record along with the unfiltered message of the gospel shines through brightly. My favorite song is "Water Into Wine", but it's a great album overall.

Chris August [The Upside of Down]

This is one of the most compelling and lyrically transparent albums of the year. Chris has vaulted himself amongst the industry's top singer-songwriters with an album that rivals the latest by Bebo Norman, Brandon Heath and Jason Gray. As it turns out, we only scratched the surface of August's soulful, inspiring and meaningful storytelling with his award winning debut album. If you want to be challenged, moved and get deeper with Chris August, don't miss out on this practically perfect album. Several of these songs are instant classics, especially "Center of It," "The Upside of Down," "Amen," and "Restore."

Best album of the year

My title says exactly how I feel about Chris's newest album. I love how God brings something in your life, just when you need it the most! And this album is that for me! This year has been one heck of a rollercoaster ride for me and my family. So along with Chris' amazing, incredible, awesome voice (I could go on about his voice), the lyrics, the music, the message... I can just sit here, close my eyes and lose myself. Each song brings something different which makes it easy to NOT hit the skip button. I love when I get an album and I don't feel the itch to skip a song. Because of this crazy emotional year, I'm so thankful for this album ! So thank you Chris! <3

Years Active: '10s

Texas Christian songwriter and singer Chris August grew up around music, particularly the secular sounds of the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Chuck Berry, and Stevie Wonder. August's dad built a small home-recording studio, and August often fooled around with the guitars, keyboards, drum machine, and four-track tape recorder his dad assembled. He began to take the whole music thing seriously when he turned 15 -- in that same year he became a Christian and began to write, play, and record music in the...
