EDITORS’ NOTES

This comprehensive anthology reminds us that Dwight Yoakam emerged in the ’80s as an heir to old-schoolers like Johnny Horton and Buck Owens, both of whom he covers. But while he extended the country tradition with tunes like the Johnny Cash-indebted “Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose,” cuts like the sophisticated string-laden ballad “Ain’t That Lonely Yet” and the country/rock collision on his cover of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me” edged country music forward without losing its roots.

Pure Country Music, but Adventurous

I'm not a huge country fan, but after hearing his "This Time" album repeatedly in 1993 I found myself unable to get the tunes out of my head. His music then led me to the Mavericks, another fantastic band. Somehow Chris Isaak and Morrissey are on the same playlists as the Mavericks and Yoakam. Dwight Yoakam is more than a triple threat; he writes, sings, produces, acts & directs. He does it all beautifully. His soaring voice and traditional, but somehow extremely modern music, never disappoints. His music is a gift that more people need to unwrap and give to themselves. His achievements put him in a class which only a handful of artists from any genre of music occupy. Sorry Kanye.

The Country Elvis

A perfect blend of classic country with bluesy rock and roll. Some may be more familiar with his acting career, but Dwight Yoakam is a true musical artist. Do you ears and soul a favor by turning off "today's hip hop/ country" and give this a listen!

Wow! How could I have missed this. If you like genuine country music - with a flare - you will like Dwight Yoakam. Give his music some time (if you're not already a fan), let it simmer like a great tea (or a great whiskey) and I think you'll thoroughly enjoy the musical "buzz" from this true country artist.
