Album Review

"Eddie's first CD," proclaims the cover of this Eddie Fisher compilation. What is not declared, anywhere in the packaging, is that the recordings of the Fisher hits that make up over half of the disc — "Any Time," "Oh! My Papa," "I'm Walking Behind You," "Lady of Spain," "Wish You Were Here," "I Need You Now," and "Heart" — are not the original recordings made in the 1950s for RCA Victor Records, but instead re-recordings made in the 1960s for Dot Records (the catalog for which has since passed into the hands of MCA Records). The other five tracks are show tunes Fisher recorded for his Dot LPs — "Try to Remember" from the musical The Fantasticks, "Call Me Irresponsible" from the movie Papa's Delicate Condition, "Sunrise Sunset" from the musical Fiddler on the Roof, "Young and Foolish" from the musical Plain and Fancy, and "If I Loved You" from the musical Carousel. Fisher is in good voice on these tracks, but consumers should not be fooled into thinking that this is a collection of the original recordings of his hits.

Yes, these are Dot label re-recordings of Eddie's RCA hits. He had two minor hits on Dot in 1965: "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Young And Foolish", which are both here. Two original hits EQUALS two stars for this CD.

Read the notes first!

Yes, there are 7 re-recordings in this set. Some people may want those in their library, but purisht should take note that they are not the "original hit recordings."

I think the 5 tracks that Eddie recorded for Dot are very good performances that showcase his warm, rich voice. Fisher was adored, then maligned and even ridiculed during his life. He had the "big voice" that was in vogue when he rose to fame, excellent diction, and the ability to deliver a ballad or a mid-tempo swinger with style and believability.

I do wish MCA would reissue more of his Dot-era repertoire as complete sets. This provides a tantalizing sampler.

The Very Best Of Eddie Fisher

This is truly NOT the best of Eddie Fisher. They are all re-dos. "I 'm Waking Behind You" without Sally Sweetland should be against the law.

Eddie Fisher ranked behind only Patti Page and Perry Como as the most successful pop singles artist of the first half of the 1950s, placing 35 songs in the Billboard charts between 1950 and 1954, including 22 Top Ten hits, among them seven gold records, four of which hit number one. Fisher was part of a new generation of male singers who eschewed the intimate crooning style of Como, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra in favor of a more bravura approach that sometimes recalled Al Jolson.
