Album Review

The Squares resurrect boldly sung 60s folk/pop harmonies and try to reinvoke the political spirit that went with them on such songs as "New Generation" and "You Are Not Alone." Such an ambition can't really be realized 20 years later, but in the meantime, the music is stirring.

A blast down memory lane

I saw The Washington Squares in concert in 1986 and waited patiently for this album to come out for another year. OK, it was the beginning of the beat/folk/hippie revival of the mid to late 1980s, but I am pleased at how well this music still stands up. Although my vinyl has long since disappeared in one of my many moves, I am thrilled iTunes has revived this nostalgic thriller for me. So, grab your black berets, and Wayfarers and enjoy!

A blast from the past

Despite the 'folky' pose, this stuff rocks. The acoustic strumming, quick picking, and three-part harmonies ride on the muscular pounding of former Television drummer Billy Ficca. Check out 'Samson & Delilah' -- it's Peter, Paul, and Mary revving at the redline. These three former NYC rockers picked up acoustic guitars, put on berets, and let it rip. Sadly, member Bruce Paskow died in the early '90s. Buy these tunes, grow a goatee, and get with the scene. I say it's time for a Beatnik revival. Dig.

The Washington Squares

The Washington Squares were a deliberate throwback to the days of earnest, politically oriented folk groups like Peter, Paul & Mary, even though they formed 20 years after the peak of the folk boom. The New York City based trio, comprising Lauren Agnelli, Tom Goodkind, and Bruce Paskow, dressed in matching outfits reminiscent of the days of the beat poets, including striped shirts, black berets, and sunglasses, with Goodkind and Paskow affecting goatees. They resurrected old folk songs and wrote...
