Takes a couple of listens
I had the good fortune of seeing PMG perform this composition before purchasing it. They performed the full 65 minute set without a single break. This is a pretty complicated composition, so it was somewhat difficult getting through it live... but I couldn't help but feel I had seen something special. Since, I have enjoyed listening to my iTunes download - especially on long drives when I can listen to it all the way through. This is a rare album in that you'll pick up something new each time you listen.
The Group Can Quit: This is the Ultimate
If the Metheny Group stopped performing today I'd be satisfied, because this breathtaking performance captures and shares all the great musical expressions we expect from them. This is one of those rare recordings we have in our collections to which we can listen on its own, over and over, because it sounds rush deep into our soul and nourish us as few other things can. If this recording is 'The Way Up', I never want to come down.
Metheny approaches the music of long form with care, and the result is a wholly pleasing and uplifting album. The 68-minute endeavor is filled with tension and build, and the experience is much like a great movie: there are many different interweaving themes (plot lines) and there are many moments of impact, glee, and longing. It's great for a long drive or for just simply kicking back and enjoying the fruits of possibly the greatest living musical artist.
