Album Review

Though usually referred to as The Way We Were, the unwieldy full title of this album is "Barbra Streisand Featuring the Hit Single The Way We Were and All in Love Is Fair," an important distinction because it was released simultaneously with the original soundtrack album for the film The Way We Were (Columbia 32830), which also contained a Streisand recording of the title song, along with the film score composed by Marvin Hamlisch. This album was thrown together quickly after that song took off as a single (in a recording different from the one in the film) in the wake of the success of the movie. In addition to the single and the Stevie Wonder song that also features in its title, the album contained a grab-bag of stray tracks dating back as far as seven years and coming from Streisand's fourth TV special, The Belle of 14th Street and an unfinished album project called "The Singer" largely made up of ballads written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Michel Legrand. The combined commercial impact of the film and the single propelled this album to the top of the charts.

Thrown Together??

This lp started out as a concept album telling a story about a female performer who yearns for love then finds it and a happy ending ensues. That project put aside, this album contains the finished songs for that intended project, "Can You Tell The Moment" and "Between Yesterday And Tomorrow" were the songs canned from this lp and released some years later on Barbra's "For The Record" anthology. This lp was released the same time as "The Way We Were" soundtrack, the soundtrack version of "The Way We Were" features a bigger string section and an alternate vocal, the title single and Stevie Wonder's "All In Love Is Fair" were huge hits. The majestic "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life" just soars, it's one of the best interpretations of this song, Dusty Springfield's version comes in as a close second. Barbra gives Paul Simon a try, her interpretation of "Something So Right" is simply gorgeous. This cd was originally released in the early eighties and was just an analog transfer to digital media, it would be remastered and re-released along with a few trademark Streisand recordings in 2002. This remastered version is absolutely the best.

The Way We Love Her

This is Barbra at her ballad-singing best. Very little yelling here. Okay, just a little in I've Never Been A Woman Before and The Best Thing You've Ever Done - but the rest are - you know - like butta. This woman knows how to tell a story when she sings and each song is hers and hers alone even though they were written by the likes of Carole King, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder! That's just the Way She Is. Thanks for sharing them with us, Barbra.

We should all throw so well !!!

Simply one of the best pop albums ever! not even a big streisand fan here but quality is quality.

Barbra Streisand's status as one of the most successful singers of her generation was remarkable not only because her popularity was achieved in the face of a dominant musical trend — rock & roll — which she did not follow, but also because she used her vocal skills as a mere stepping stone to other careers, as a stage and film actress and as a film director. Born in 1942 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she struggled briefly as an actress and nightclub singer in New York during...
