Album Review

Fans of Abba's sugary-sweet pop songs will no doubt be surprised by Something's Going On, the remarkably hard-edged 1982 solo album by Abba vocalist Anni-Frida Lyngstad, better known simply as Frida. Produced by Phil Collins, Something's Going On includes a wide range of material, including songs written by Bryan Ferry ("The Way You Do"), Stephen Bishop ("Tell Me It's Over"), and Gerry Rafferty ("I See Red"), and even includes a Dorothy Parker poem set to music ("Thernody"). Something's Going On boasts impressive guitar work by Daryl Stuermer, who has toured with Genesis as well as appeared on several Collins solo albums. Collins' drum work is also outstanding, particularly on the hard-hitting hit single "I Know There's Something Going On." Frida herself shows an unexpected emotional range given Abba's two-dimensional pop gloss. Sure, she still chirps and tweets like a bird, but the diversity of the material and the freedom of recording solo obviously allows her to enter different musical territory. Frida escapes the creative limitations of being a member of one of the world's most popular groups on this solid and often riveting album.

Worth all 11 tracks!

When artists do solo projects, they are often criticized for NOT sounding anything close to the band they flew solo from. My reaction is this: Solo work is that which reflects the individual's creativeness as a whole and as their own person. Frida did just that on this solo effort. There's not one track on this album that will make you think Abba. This is a non-abba work of art. A different sound with sometimes eccentric beats. Definately worth the purchase. Too bad she never followed up with another solo album to top this one. She did release an album titled "Shine" after "Something's Going On", but it didn't come close. So treasure this one!

No second fiddle

Frida has always been my favorite voice in ABBA. Could any voice sound as rich as she does in ABBA's "Knowing Me, Knowing You?" There is not a single dud on this entire cd. She and producer Phil Collins picked from the hottest songwriters of the day. The Brian Ferry penned-song "The Way You Do" is flawless, as is the haunting, atmospheric "To Turn The Stone." Other highlights are the rocking "Tell Me It's Over" and folk-tinged "Threnody." Also, no review would be complete without mentioning the excellent jazz-influenced "Baby Don"t You Cry No More" and the touching ballad "You Know What I Mean." I can honestly say that overall, this cd is slightly better than some ABBA cds, the exceptions being "Super Trouper," "The Album," and "Voulez-Vous," of course- all perfect. Buy this and enjoy! Look for her award-winning 1996 Swedish language cd "Djupa Andetag". It's even better than this one and I don't speak Swedish.

I keep coming back

I usually play my iPod on shuffle, but when I hear any one of these songs, I'll stop shuffling and play the whole album. Every track is good. I love ABBA, but Frida's music is something completely different, and holds up better than the group. It's definitely rock music. I remember "I Know There's Something Going On" from radio in the 80's, and the whole album delivers on it's promise of quality. ... It's not nostalgia. It's a great set of songs that weave together well. Ironically, the Phil Collins duet seems tacked on, particularly because it's last. I guess that's my reminder to put it back in shuffle. But I'll be back!

Frida is a Scandinavian vocalist best known as a member of the massively successful Swedish pop outfit ABBA. With her warm mezzo-soprano vocal range and striking auburn hair, Frida often worked in beautiful counterpoint to her blonde soprano ABBA bandmate Agnetha Faltskog. Though she began her career as a traditional folk-inflected singer in the 1960s, by the 1980s she had matured into a sophisticated and environmentally conscious pop icon. Though she has kept a discreet public profile...
